these few days have been spend on trips to the hospital
grandma has been admitted
and this time her condition looks gloomy

seeing her lying there
breathing with the aid of an oxygen mask
unable to move or speak
limbs swollen because of water retention

I am utterly saddened
and feeling helpless
to be very frank
there is nothing much we can do
other than make her feel as comfortable as possible

smack in the middle of my prelims
totally moodless to go for papers
my grandma is definitely more important

I know this sounds terrible
hard to accept
but the reality is
they can't operate on her because of her weak heart and old age
doctor has asked us to prepare for the worst
she might not make it pass the weekend
and if she pulls through
she has about 2-3 months
due to the cancerous cyst in her stomach

just now
while driving my aunt to the temple to pray
she was talking to a hk relative on the phone
and as she spoke about my grandma's condition
she started crying
my eyes welled up with tears
and I cried too
I can so feel her sorrow
suddenly, she is going to lose her mum that she has stayed with for her whole life
she was talking about how she wanted my grandma to go home
even if she has 2 months left
so she could see the new fridge she had just bought
but that if my grandma felt that she was suffering, she can 'go off' with no worries
but if she can fight and hang on my aunt will bring her home to see the fridge
and live off her remaining days
hearing all that just utterly broke my heart

till now
I'm still awake
worried of what I might face when I go to the hospital later in the day
the gloom of impending doom
life and death matters have never been very easy things to deal with
some things are just beyond our control
I just pray that grandma pulls through this round
whatever comes later is another issue

1 hurdle after another
I need a shoulder to lean on
I need someone to talk to
if only 'you' will call

well, at least for another year

it has been a tiring 2.5 wks
waking up early
training under the hot sun

I went in with a heavy heart

yet I'm feeling thankful right now
cause the tough training woke me up

sad to say, quite surprisingly, I belong to the latter group

not knowing who to ask out can be a big headache
another issue is transport

JB nursing homes draw some S'poreans

WHEN civil servant Gordon Yong, 39, needed to find a nursing home for his mother following her stroke, he found the ones in Singapore too expensive.

They were charging between $1,200 and $1,800 a month - far more than he could afford on his salary of under $4,000, which also supports his three-child family. His working wife also has to look after her parents.

He did the next best thing and got his mother a place in a home in Johor Baru (JB) for $600 a month. This is how Madam Leong Mew Peng, 80, came to live in Spring Valley Homecare, less than half an hour's drive from the Causeway.

Fellow Singaporean Alison Low, 58, checked herself into Spring Valley over two years ago - also for cost reasons.

The three-year-old home has 11 Singaporeans, making up one in five residents there. Of the 10 other homes The Straits Times inquired at in JB, eight said they had between one and 10 Singaporeans.

Checks with their kin showed cost savings to be the main draw of these homes.

A plug for these homes came in Parliament on Monday from Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who said Singaporeans could save money by using JB nursing homes. For what it costs to board someone in a private nursing home here, 'you can stretch it easily to pay for at least 21/2 months of nursing home care in Johor Baru', he said. The facilities there typically charge between $450 and $1,000 a month, compared to those here which ask for between $1,000 and $4,000.

Mr Khaw said another perk is that JB is 'near enough for relatives to visit'.

But 57-year-old supervisor Mohamed Waris, whose father is at Spring Valley, said he has problems finding a cab to go there. Nonetheless, he makes the journey every two to three weeks.

Those who check out JB homes are also finding some with facilities that are comparable to those here.

Spring Valley, for example, follows Singapore regulations and provides one toilet for every four beds. Its high ceilings and large windows make its rooms airy.

China Healthcare, previously known as Econ Healthcare, will open a 200-bed home in JB within two years, following its 100-bed facility in Kuala Lumpur. Its chairman, Mr Ong Chu Poh, said a home in JB would appeal to Singaporeans due to their familiarity with the town, its proximity to Singapore and the lower fees.

Mr Yong would agree that JB is still the best choice for him now for those reasons. 'I'm just unable to afford the rates here. But I do wish I was able to bring my mother back.'

Singapore cost of living is high

The Leaking Bucket

There was a gardener who had a leaking bucket.
Every day without fail, he would use it to ferry water from the nearby well to water the garden.
However, by the time he reached the garden, half of the water in the bucket would have leaked out
The bucket felt very ashamed of itself and felt that the leak was a big flaw, but the gardener never once complained and used the bucket every day rain or shine.
One day, the bucket could not take it any longer.
It asked the gardener why he continued using the bucket even though he knew about the leak.
It was totally not efficient and he could have gotten a brand new bucket which did not leak at all.
The gardener then said to the bucket, "You notice the bunch of flowers I gather for the master everyday? They are your handiwork. Knowing that you leaked, I planted many seeds along the path I would take from the well to the garden. Without the water leaking from you, I would not be able to grow such beautiful flowers. You deserve the credit."
After hearing this, the bucket finally realised why the gardener had used the bucket all along. His flaw had been a blessing in disguise after all.

Sometimes, we tend to focus on our weak points and feel lousy about ourselves. Who knows, our weak points may actually turn out to be our strong points after all. =)

I really love TVB dramas
they are really a cut above the rest
the actors and actresses are very pro
so much 'feel' in the characters
hard to believe it's not real

I came across a topic in a forum
talking about how our local mediacorp dramas nowadays simply can't compare with those SBC dramas in the past
I agree wholeheartedly
I really miss the acting back then
I grew up watching those shows
though not quite understanding the plots cause of my age
I remember I would eagerly anticipate the next episode
wait patiently for the credits to roll so that I can catch a glimpse of the next episode's highlights
then go to bed wishing the next day would quickly come

watching the theme songs on Youtube brought tears to my eyes
somehow the old dramas have a quality similar to TVB shows
the channel 8 dramas now to be frank are simply no fight
the standard is totally different IMHO
the sincerity of the acting
the ability to relate to our common experiences
I can't even be bothered to watch local dramas nowadays
cause I don't find myself immersing in the plot or feeling for the characters
they fail to evoke any feelings in me
with all due respect to the present bunch of actors/actresses

2008 has been a year of many ups and downs
many trials and tribulations
I was excited, disappointed, scared, frustrated, desperate,......
I had both bitter and sweet memories
I fell, got up, fell again, got up again and fell once more
through all these, I think I have grown stronger, wiser and that bit more pessimistic

for the year of 2008 :-

I was addicted to Discovery, especially Dirty Jobs
my FYP project, named water ballerina, couldn't be operated in water and was kenna suan LOL
did my ITP at Sentosa 4D Magix
my final semester result slip had all A's and B's which pulled up my pathetic GPA just a little
I finally got my diploma after 3 years in poly
fretted over where to head to next to further my studies
won my first ever lucky draw prize at EEE club DnD
ate and ate and ate, but didn't exercise
passed my 2.4km run with an outstanding time of 12:40
turned 26 all too soon
my poly friends enlisted for army while I went for my 4th reservist training
applying for university got me all flustered and ultimately dejected
somehow pulled off my dramatic NTU appeal and finally made it into uni 8 years after my 'A' level mishap
screaming bloody murder after getting into NTU EEE even though I was begging to get in
feeling out of sync with my friends who are in another stage of their lives while I'm still stuck in school
endured 3 months of hell in NTU and studied like never before
did not join a single CCA cos time no enough
made 3 friends in uni and they were my project mates O.o
finally stopped working at NYDC cos I did not even have enough time to study let alone work
did all the past year papers aka poly style studying and kenna play out for uni exams
back to square one in terms of studies and stuck at a crossroad now
spent my holidays at home watching tvb dramas
christmas and new year was spent at home
2009 came all too soon

So, for 2009
I just wish for good health and good luck for everyone

often I will pick up my friend(s) and go out
then send them home

After 5 weeks of school,I'm starting to wonder whether I'm really cut out for uni life. I'm really struggling though I hate to admit it. The pace is frightening and I feel myself getting pushed closer and closer to the edge of the cliff, ready to give up. That is a friggin' scary thought. I'm afraid I'll breakdown sooner or later.

I remember just last Monday night, I was wondering when this Monday would come, not that I was looking forward to it. Now it's THIS MONDAY.
OMG!
Time is flying by, ticking down to the exams. I'm worried sick, not because I haven't been studying, but because I'm wondering how much studying would be considered enough.

I enjoyed my poly life, true there were ups n downs. I actually enjoyed going to school and seeing my friends everyday. Lessons were bearable, days passed quickly and exams were a challenge. This does not seem to be the case for uni. I cringe at the thought of going to school and I've to literally drag myself out of bed and convince myself that it's all worth the effort. There is no "usual" group of friends having lessons with me, eating and chatting together and supporting each other. My days seem filled with sorrow, whether it's self induced or not I am unsure. One thing for sure, I'm feeling miserable.

I'm contemplating many things; such as changing course, giving up and starting work instead or even enrolling in another school. I dunno whether I'm reacting this way because I'm trying to look for an easy way out but these thoughts have crossed my mind recently. However, I jolly well know that giving up my place would probably mean never ever stepping into NTU again because the competition would be worse in the coming years. What a dilemma! Also, giving up would be a disgrace, announcing to everyone that I'm cannot-make-it, bey gan and people would be sniggering. Trust me, they will be. Not only that, I'll be disappointing my close friends and family members.

I've also noticed something. In recent months, I seem to be getting weak-willed and would tremble in the face of difficulty. I can't explain why I feel this way and this really scares me. A little setback and I feel like giving up. No fighting spirit present at all. Is this my threshold? Am I really not suitable for a uni education? I really have no mood to study anymore. Maybe working really seems like a better option. I really dunno, my mind is in a mess, I feel like shit, I have no confidence in myself, I feel like crying.

anyway
was chatting with the peeps after work
I referred to this concept
so I shall blog about it
it's the 'pink elephant' concept
a human brain interprets every input logically
so in order for a human brain to 'not think of a pink elephant'
it first has to think of it
then after that can it only 'not think of a pink elephant'
so
instead of telling someone to 'not be lazy'
we should actually tell the person to 'be hardworking'
see the difference
the brain would have to think of 'lazy'
then make an effort not to 'be lazy'
whereas if we directly tell a person to be hardworking
all the brain has to process is to be hardworking
so the whole idea behind this is
it is better to tell yourself to be positive rather than to tell yourself not to be negative
the results will be stunning
and I'm constantly reminding myself of this =)

work is like an escape from the awful reality that I have to live with

I hate to admit
I'm in a dilemma
to pursue my dreams without a degree IN SINGAPORE sounds suicidal
I'm afraid to step out
I ask myself this question
why am I so scared?
yet I can't answer myself
maybe the thought of not being able to make it to a local university after so many years is still haunting me
maybe to me the idea of success is associated with having a degree
maybe I'm just not confident of my abilities
worried that others will judge me based on my certs
labelling me a 2nd class worker as compared to a graduate

back from my poly class chalet
meant to let the guys enjoy one last time before enlistment
the bbq was great
i think for the 1st time in a long time
all the food that was bbq-ed came out edible

the unconditional love from my parents that I failed to appreciate back then

about the lost temples of cambodia and the landmines which surround them
the "underground guardians"
how the cambodian people are working to clear them
so that the temples can be explored

even given 1 month's wages in exchange for immediate termination of contract

she worked for nydc for 10 years
yet was fired because one of the upper management didn't like her
actually he was aiming her liao
just waiting for the right opportunity to 'chop' her

I think she has done more for nydc than possibly some of the higher management have
all the shit she kenna from customers
coming back when problems arise even though its her off day
guiding the new managers when they just came in
