let the good times roll
I really love TVB dramas
they are really a cut above the rest
the actors and actresses are very pro
so much 'feel' in the characters
hard to believe it's not real
I came across a topic in a forum
talking about how our local mediacorp dramas nowadays simply can't compare with those SBC dramas in the past
I agree wholeheartedly
I really miss the acting back then
I grew up watching those shows
though not quite understanding the plots cause of my age
I remember I would eagerly anticipate the next episode
wait patiently for the credits to roll so that I can catch a glimpse of the next episode's highlights
then go to bed wishing the next day would quickly come
watching the theme songs on Youtube brought tears to my eyes
somehow the old dramas have a quality similar to TVB shows
the channel 8 dramas now to be frank are simply no fight
the standard is totally different IMHO
the sincerity of the acting
the ability to relate to our common experiences
I can't even be bothered to watch local dramas nowadays
cause I don't find myself immersing in the plot or feeling for the characters
they fail to evoke any feelings in me
with all due respect to the present bunch of actors/actresses
the actors/actresses nowadays are just like a bunch of soulless acting machines
新的连续剧缺乏从前连续剧的人情味!
in contrast
the SBC dramas were so different
really very fine and touching acting
the shows back then could leave such an impression on me
I'm sure those people who grew up watching SBC shows can relate
I wanted to be a traffic policeman after watching 铁警雄风 (my favourite drama)
realised the hardship of the samsui women after watching 红头巾
saw how early immigrants from China suffered to built Singapore up in 雾锁南洋
feel the warmth of friendship and neighbourly love during our grandparent's and parents' time in 五脚基
lived the life of an ah beng in 边缘少年
watched stories surrounding the lives of coffeeshop hawkers in the heartland of a Singapore housing neighbourhood in 咖啡乌
all true blue classics!!
can you say the same for dramas now
not even close
the only thing I'm inspired to do is to switch channels
"不是每一个人都能演, 更不是每一个戏戏里拥有漂亮脸孔的演员就会受到好评。
天啊! 请不要在拍任何连续剧如过你不会在二十年后从新回味的戏
新的连续剧缺乏从前连续剧的人情味!"
I agree with this comment
the dramas nowadays are so forgettable
people forget about them all too easily
however
till now
I can still vividly remember the old SBC shows that were aired 20 years ago
just imagine what an impression they must have left on me
the dramas back then were a reflection of people's lives
their trials and tribulations
their growing up experiences
their joys and sorrows
were all brought to life in the dramas
it touched the hearts of people
watching them now
I can feel the nostalgia
another comment
"I jux realised that the 1980s SBC dramas were similar to the Qiong-Yao style, but customised at Singapore's level... they were all touching, romantic & has such strong holding power on viewers till today. Pity that today's were nothing much to talk about as compared to these nice oldies :("
when the theme songs played
I could sing along
the memories came back
my childhood days came back
I remember sitting in front of the black and white TV together with my babysitter and her sisters and watching the dramas unfold
sing the theme song
argue over the plot
scold the bad characters
feel sorry for the suffering good guys
yearn for the next episode
yet another comment
"When the music starts, I still can sing the song. Amazing. I couldn't believe that I even remembered them. Love it. It would be wonderful it could be replayed again. Better on the Youtube.
who could forget all the theme songs
creative and original
soulful and meaningful words
sang by local artistes or the actors/actresses themselves
the tunes were so catchy
I'll be humming them in school for weeks
the effort put in the shows were of another level
the old dramas had explosions, stunts, firearms, swordplay, car crashes, etc, etc
you name it you had it
so much variety and excitement
pretty faces count so much more nowadays as compared to good acting
the present dramas only know how to talk and cry
walk here walk there
then talk and cry again
BORING!!
there are many things which I remember about the old dramas
Ah Shui from 雾锁南洋
edmund chen acting as a highway patrol officer in 铁警雄风
the 'V' ET handsign in 飞越银河
Aiyoyo Laoshi
Lee Nan Xing as the big brother aka ah beng leader in 边缘少年
er gu in kopi O
周初明 in 金牌师爷
Tuo Tuo Hai who likes to eat chicken backside in 金牌师爷 as well
天师钟馗 in his red suit
范文芳&王沺裁's love story in 解连环
Chen Hanwei as Fang Lao Shi in 阳光列车
all the flying cards and dice tricks in 双天至尊
xie shaoguang limping his way to success in 金枕头
and so many others
bring back the old dramas!!

good luck to me =)
2008 has been a year of many ups and downs
many trials and tribulations
I was excited, disappointed, scared, frustrated, desperate,......
I had both bitter and sweet memories
I fell, got up, fell again, got up again and fell once more
through all these, I think I have grown stronger, wiser and that bit more pessimistic
for the year of 2008 :-
I was addicted to Discovery, especially Dirty Jobs
my FYP project, named water ballerina, couldn't be operated in water and was kenna suan LOL
did my ITP at Sentosa 4D Magix
my final semester result slip had all A's and B's which pulled up my pathetic GPA just a little
I finally got my diploma after 3 years in poly
fretted over where to head to next to further my studies
won my first ever lucky draw prize at EEE club DnD
ate and ate and ate, but didn't exercise
passed my 2.4km run with an outstanding time of 12:40
turned 26 all too soon
my poly friends enlisted for army while I went for my 4th reservist training
applying for university got me all flustered and ultimately dejected
somehow pulled off my dramatic NTU appeal and finally made it into uni 8 years after my 'A' level mishap
screaming bloody murder after getting into NTU EEE even though I was begging to get in
feeling out of sync with my friends who are in another stage of their lives while I'm still stuck in school
endured 3 months of hell in NTU and studied like never before
did not join a single CCA cos time no enough
made 3 friends in uni and they were my project mates O.o
finally stopped working at NYDC cos I did not even have enough time to study let alone work
did all the past year papers aka poly style studying and kenna play out for uni exams
back to square one in terms of studies and stuck at a crossroad now
spent my holidays at home watching tvb dramas
christmas and new year was spent at home
2009 came all too soon
So, for 2009
I just wish for good health and good luck for everyone
hope luck goes my way
things will work out fine
if only life was as easy as playing Geo Challenge on Facebook
here we go again 2009!!
